Malaga 03/04/2014

We only had a short voyage overnight of about 70 nautical miles from Gibraltar to Malaga (Spain).  We docked today at 0800.  This was a short stop as we were due to leave at 1400 to go to Rome's port (Civitavecchia) some 850 nautical miles.  We are due to arrive there on Saturday 5th April at 0900.
Given our time here was short, we decided to only take a stroll around the city centre of Malaga.  A very clean city with a diverse mix of architecture both historical and new.
The weather wasn't particularly kind.  We had a forecast maximum of 15 degrees combined with very light showers and a 'lazy' breeze.  Short bursts of clear sky and sunlight presented some perfect lighting to pull off a few shots - so I did.
A little bit sad today as we said goodbye to our friends Christine and Jenny.  They disembarked today at Malaga to go onto the next leg of their trip which eventually takes them to the US.  We didn't do any touring as such.
I don't think my knee would have held up to much more anyway.  An easy afternoon with some stiff anti-inflammatory medication gives me some time to catch up on the blog and sorting photos.
Catch you tomorrow!!!

Gibraltar 02/04/2014

Today we docked at the Port of Gibraltar at around 0730 and grabbed a taxi for a tour around the rock - our driver was Kevin (a local born and bred).  We had seven in our party today.  We kicked off for a quick tour through the 100 Ton Gun, St Michael's Cave, the Great Siege Tunnels, Moorish Castle, Europa Point and the resident monkeys - the Barbary Macaques.

We then took a stroll around the main city centre.  The girls did some shopping. I did some 'tyre kicking' in a camera shop but came away empty handed.
One of the highlights of the day for me was the monkeys.  They run around in the wild here.  They are territorial and hang around in gangs, so when gangs come across one another, there's an 'all-in' brawl apparently.
Gibraltar is a British Territory and has been since the 18th century.  A population of around 30,000 people.  It's neighbouring city La Linia shares the border between which is basically the perimeter of the airport.  It's interesting - the airport runway and the main road that crosses the border intersect.

Whenever a plane lands or takes off, they temporarily close the road to clear the runway.  We got to witness a flight arrival from a high vantage point above the airport where the tunnels are.
All aboard by 1830 and we set off around 1900.
