Launceston - 17-18/03/2024

In Launceston, we stayed at 'Old Mac's Caravan and Motorhome Farm Stay' - a great little spot for travelers on the edges of Launceston.  We had a powered site for 2 nights - that's all we could get.

Ben Lomond's alpine vegetated plateau

After setup, we ventured out to Ben Lomond National Park, a drive of about 50km from camp. Ben Lomond is Tasmania's 2nd highest peak at 1572m.  The drive to the ski village at the top is an epic one.  The highlight of which, is known as 'Jacobs Ladder' with six switchbacks up the steepest part of the climb surrounded by dolerite columns and scree slopes overlooking amazing views of Tasmania's north east.  While we were at the lookout at the top of the climb, a 2WD people mover drove up the climb pretty much spinning his wheels the whole way to the top.

Second day, first up, checked out Cataract Gorge carved by the South Esk River smack inside the city of Launceston.

Then, we took a journey up the Tamar Valley region via, Grindelwald, Beaconsfield, George Town and enjoyed a picnic dunch at Low Head.
