Sheffield - 08 - 12/03/2024

Since we last talked, we found a great little overnighter in Devonport called Horsehead Creek campground - $10 a night. Pretty full by nightfall with many catching the SoT back to the mainland early the next morning. We took our time and headed SSW to Sheffield (pop. 1,602) which is only about a 40km drive.

We planned on staying at the council run RV park but as we arrived, it soon became evident that wasn’t gonna happen! It’s a long weekend in Tassie (Labour Day). Every man and his dog was here. There was a bit happening. So, we found a spot on a farm-stay 4km out of town. $12 a night for a premium spot in a paddock in the foot hills of Mt Roland.

Starry, Starry Night...

We decided to stay for 5 nights. Each day we took an untethered drive in different directions exploring the area within about a 50km radius. Many highlights - Lake Barrington was hosting a rowing regatta, Liffey Falls, Leven Canyon(Wow!), A huuugge Stringy Bark (Eucalyptus Obliqua) tree, Cethana Dam and Power Station, Lake Gairdner and, on the way back to basecamp, did some driving and droving.

The walk into Liffey Falls through a canopy of tree ferns is gorgeous!

On Sunday morning, I caught a glimpse of the Aurora Australis from our campsite but it was heavily overcast.  So, my goal to capture it still remains that - a goal.  Just need a clear sky and a happening phenomenon and be in the right spot at the right time - shouldn't be too hard, right?

Come Wednesday, we'll move on.  Bound for Cradle Mountain, which will be the subject of the next post.
